How the holiday year works in Croatia

The calendar

Croatia's calendar mixes Catholic feasts with statehood dates — Statehood Day on 30 May, Anti-Fascist Struggle Day on 22 June, Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day on 5 August and Independence Day on 8 October.

How people take the days

There is no rolling-over of weekend holidays, so a bad year loses several days. The late-June and early-August clusters are when most people take their main coastal leave.

If you're visiting

Coastal towns run at full capacity through every summer holiday — restaurants and ferries do not close. Inland, Assumption on 15 August brings large pilgrimages, notably to Marija Bistrica.

If you live here

Zagreb and the interior close far more completely than the Adriatic does. Stock up before 1 November and 15 August, when supermarkets in the capital shut.

Public

Officially recognised as a public holiday, so most people have the day off work.
Business
Expect offices, banks and the majority of shops to be closed.
Transport
Public transport usually runs a Sunday or holiday timetable.

General guidance based on this day's official classification, not country-specific reporting.

Christmas Day

25 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
The central Christian winter feast; in most countries the household gathering matters more than the church service.
Business

Transport
Skeleton or suspended services in many countries. Book intercity travel well ahead.
