How the holiday year works in Hungary

The calendar

Hungary keeps a compact list of national days — 15 March, 20 August and 23 October — alongside the Christian calendar. The government publishes an official rearranged-workday order each year that shifts days to build long weekends.

How people take the days

Bridging is legislated rather than left to workers: when a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the Monday or Friday is given off and worked back on a nearby Saturday. Check the annual order before booking anything.

If you're visiting

20 August brings the year's biggest fireworks over the Danube and packed central Budapest; 23 October and 15 March bring ceremonies and flag-heavy crowds around Parliament.

If you live here

Those rearranged Saturdays are genuine working days — schools, offices and public transport run a weekday schedule on them, which catches most newcomers out at least once.

What these days actually mean

All Saints Day

Public
Observance

Transport
Extra services to cemeteries; heavy intercity travel over the weekend.

Christmas Day

25 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
The central Christian winter feast; in most countries the household gathering matters more than the church service.
Business
Near-total closure of retail, offices and banks. Expect the preceding afternoon to shut early too.
Transport
Skeleton or suspended services in many countries. Book intercity travel well ahead.
