How the holiday year works in Türkiye

The calendar

Turkey combines fixed civic holidays with the two Islamic festivals, Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı, which move roughly eleven days earlier each year against the Gregorian calendar.

How people take the days

The government routinely extends the bayram periods by declaring adjacent half or full days off, producing breaks of up to nine days. Those announcements come only weeks in advance.

If you're visiting

Bayram weeks mean packed coaches, full coastal hotels and quiet cities — Istanbul is at its calmest. Banks and offices close; restaurants and transport run.

If you live here

Annual leave starts at 14 days and rises with service. Watch for the arife, the half day before each bayram, which is a public holiday from the afternoon.
