How the holiday year works in Vietnam

The calendar

Vietnam keeps a short official list, but Tết Nguyên Đán dominates it: the lunar new year gives at least five consecutive days and in practice pauses the country for longer.

How people take the days

Reunification Day on 30 April and International Labour Day on 1 May sit together, forming a second reliable break. The government confirms exact Tết dates each autumn.

If you're visiting

Around Tết, family-run businesses close for a week or more, domestic flights sell out and prices rise. Hung Kings' Temple Day in spring adds a third holiday.

If you live here

Staff frequently extend Tết with unpaid leave to reach distant provinces; plan for reduced capacity for a fortnight rather than the official five days.
