How people take the days

When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday becomes a holiday by law. Bridging around midweek dates is common in corporate Johannesburg and Cape Town, and December sees a genuine national wind-down.

If you're visiting

Malls and restaurants open on nearly every holiday; banks and government offices close. Good Friday and Christmas Day are the exceptions where retail thins out.

Working a public holiday pays double under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Annual leave is 21 consecutive days, which works out to 15 working days.
