Guatemala keeps a relatively short holiday list, with Holy Week as the centrepiece of the year and processions in Antigua recognised by UNESCO.
Holy Thursday and Good Friday stop the country, and many employers give the whole week. On 1 November cemeteries fill and giant kites fly at Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez.
Sawdust carpets close streets for hours in Antigua and central Guatemala City. Banks and offices close; tourist businesses run at capacity.
Each municipality also has its patron-saint day as a local holiday — ask at work, because it isn't on the national calendar.
