How the holiday year works in Sweden

The calendar

Sweden's thirteen red days follow the Lutheran calendar, with Midsummer Eve and Midsummer Day in late June functioning as the emotional centre of the year rather than Christmas.

How people take the days

Klämdag — the squeezed day between a holiday and the weekend — is normally taken, and many workplaces close outright. The bigger pattern is the July shutdown: four consecutive weeks of leave is standard and much of industry closes with it.

If you're visiting

Midsummer is the one weekend when Swedish cities genuinely empty and shops close early. On other holidays supermarkets open, systembolaget and banks don't.

If you live here

Statutory leave is 25 days and employees have a right to four consecutive weeks in summer. Several holidays fall on fixed weekdays, so red-day counts vary year to year with no replacement.

Christmas Eve

24 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
Julafton is the real Christmas in Sweden: the meal, the presents and, for a large share of the country, Donald Duck on television at three in the afternoon.
Business
Not officially a public holiday, but everything closes by lunchtime and most people have the day off.
Transport
Very reduced services from midday; last trains out are packed.

Christmas Day

25 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
The central Christian winter feast; in most countries the household gathering matters more than the church service.

Transport
Skeleton or suspended services in many countries. Book intercity travel well ahead.

St. Stephen's Day

26 Dec 2026

Business
