Emancipation Day
Saturday, 1 Aug 2026 · Jamaica · Nationwide · Public holiday
Bridge day check
Falls on the weekend, so it costs most people no leave — and in many countries no day is given back.
What the day is for
1 August marks the end of slavery in 1838. The night before, crowds gather for watch-night services and the reading of the proclamation at Spanish Town and National Heroes Park, a tradition going back to the all-night vigils of 1838.
Do shops and banks close?
Public holiday; banks, offices and most shops close. Beach parties and sound-system events run all weekend.
Getting around
Sunday schedules; roads to the north-coast beaches are busy through the whole Emancipation weekend.
When it falls each year
Floating holidays shift; fixed ones move only in which weekday they land on.
