How the holiday year works in Finland

The calendar

Finland has around twelve holidays, several fixed to specific weekdays — Midsummer and All Saints' always fall on a Saturday, which quietly removes them from the working year.

How people take the days

Because several holidays are pinned to Saturdays, the practical number of days off varies a lot by year. Ascension and Midsummer Eve are the reliable bridges; July is the standard month for four weeks of leave.

If you're visiting

Shops open freely on most holidays under liberalised trading rules, with Midsummer and Christmas the exceptions. Public transport runs a Sunday timetable.

If you live here

Leave accrues at two or two and a half days per month depending on service length. Midsummer Eve is not officially a holiday but almost nobody works it.

What these days actually mean

Observance, business closures and transport impact for the next few dates.

All Saints' Day

31 Oct 2026

Public
Observance
Families visit cemeteries with flowers and candles. Quiet and reflective rather than festive.
Business
Banks and most shops closed in Catholic-majority countries; florists do their busiest day of the year.
Transport
Extra services to cemeteries; heavy intercity travel over the weekend.

Independence Day

6 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
6 December is solemn rather than festive: two candles in the window, blue-and-white flags, and the televised Presidential Independence Day Reception that much of the country watches.
Business
Banks, offices and most shops close.
Transport
Sunday timetables; torchlit processions close central streets in university cities.

Christmas Eve

24 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
Officially recognised as a public holiday, so most people have the day off work.
Business
Expect offices, banks and the majority of shops to be closed.
Transport
Public transport usually runs a Sunday or holiday timetable.

General guidance based on this day's official classification, not country-specific reporting.

Christmas Day

25 Dec 2026

Public
Observance
The central Christian winter feast; in most countries the household gathering matters more than the church service.
Business
Near-total closure of retail, offices and banks. Expect the preceding afternoon to shut early too.
Transport
Skeleton or suspended services in many countries. Book intercity travel well ahead.
