What the day is for
Marks the 1867 confederation of the provinces. Ottawa's Parliament Hill show is the national focus; elsewhere it is fireworks, red-and-white everything and community barbecues. In Quebec it is overshadowed by 24 June and doubles as moving day, when most residential leases turn over.
