Brazil combines national holidays with state and municipal ones, and Carnival — technically not a national holiday at all — shuts the country for the better part of a week.
Enforcement of the emenda, the bridge day, is widespread: a Tuesday or Thursday holiday routinely takes the adjacent working day with it. Carnival itself runs Monday and Tuesday with Ash Wednesday a half day by custom.
Bars, restaurants and beaches are the point of a Brazilian holiday; banks and offices close hard. Carnival brings major street closures and inflated accommodation prices in Rio, Salvador and Recife.
Annual leave is 30 calendar days and can be split into three periods. The thirteenth-month salary paid in two instalments before Christmas is the other thing that shapes the Brazilian year.
