Bridge day check
Falls on the weekend, so it costs most people no leave — and in many countries no day is given back.
What the day is for
29 August marks the 1944 rising against the wartime Nazi-aligned state, launched from Banská Bystrica. The museum there is the focus, with a military-history display and veterans' ceremony.
Do shops and banks close?
Public holiday; banks, offices and most shops close.
Getting around
Sunday services; late-summer travel to the mountains is heavy.
When it falls each year
Floating holidays shift; fixed ones move only in which weekday they land on.
