What the day is for
Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas marks the death of the poet Luís de Camões in 1580 and honours the Portuguese diaspora. The official ceremony rotates to a different city each year and is held abroad in part.

Banks and offices close; shops and restaurants mostly open. In Lisbon it runs into the Santo António festivities.
