Falls on a Friday, so it makes a three-day weekend with no leave needed.
What the day is for
The Māori new year, set by the rising of the Matariki star cluster, and the first public holiday anywhere to come from indigenous tradition. Dawn ceremonies, remembrance of those who died in the past year, and shared food.
Do shops and banks close?
Banks, offices and many shops closed.
Getting around
Holiday services with extra early runs to dawn ceremony sites.
When it falls each year
