What the day is for
Pohela Boishakh, 14 April, opens the Bengali calendar. People wear red and white, eat panta ilish and join the Mongol Shobhajatra procession in Dhaka.
Do shops and banks close?
Public holiday; offices and banks close, while street markets and fairs boom.
Getting around
Central Dhaka (Ramna, Shahbag) is packed; expect closures and slow traffic.
When it falls each year
Floating holidays shift; fixed ones move only in which weekday they land on.
