Bridge day check
Falls on a Tuesday. Book the Monday off and you get a four-day weekend — expect a lot of colleagues to do exactly that.
Book off 2 Nov 2026 for 4 days off.
What the day is for
A public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne only, for a horse race that stops the nation for three minutes on the first Tuesday of November. The rest of Australia works through it.
Do shops and banks close?
Closed across Melbourne; normal trading elsewhere in Australia.
Getting around
Extra trains to Flemington; heavy afternoon crowding on the Melbourne network.
When it falls each year
Floating holidays shift; fixed ones move only in which weekday they land on.
